Ginny grew up on television. She was the child star everyone loved to hate. She is the youngest child with an older sister who could do no wrong and a brother who liked to tease and terrorize her (like all brothers do). Because she was a child, her mother was responsible for managing her money. And she did. Right out of the bank account. When the show finally ended, she was so glad. She went off to college, had a boyfriend and lived life. Until one viral video caused her to go into hiding.
Declan grew up in a loving family. He grew up playing hockey and went on to play college and then pro hockey. His college roommate happened to be the boyfriend of Ginny. After college, both he and his best friend went pro and played on the same team. He was witness to the events that caused the viral video and the fallout afterwards.
When Ginny was in college, she believed Declan hated her. He barely spoke to her when they were all together and avoided her at all costs. If the winery did not need the money, she would have vetoed him being the documentarian doing the special on the winery. So instead, she refuses to participate on camera.
Declan knows there is something up with this winery. When he shows up early for Ginny’s sister’s wedding she is shocked to see him. But then chaos rolls in, via her mother, and he steps in to help. But she does not want his help.
Declan puts the pieces together about the winery, but instead of holding it over their heads, he keeps their secret. He knows what Ginny went through after her viral fiasco, since he was there and watched the fallout live. But she does not trust him. He has hated her and what she did. So why is he being so nice to her.
Well, when the truth comes out that Declan was actually attracted to Ginny all those years ago in college, but he could not betray his best friend, she does not believe him. But they start to bond. He steps in to help fix things. Including when her mother shows up wanting to be in the documentary like old times.
But when someone leaves white envelopes around the compound, Declan becomes the prime suspect. And Ginny questions why he would do it. They do not want charity and he knows that. But with his videos of tasks around the winery go viral, is he secretly passing the benefit on to them?
But Declan has dreamed of playing hockey again. So when he gets the call, he and Ginny have to figure out if what they have can withstand a long distance, traveling relationship. This is his dream and Ginny’s worst nightmare. Especially since they have yet to tell her ex about their relationship. Will this be the straw that breaks the camel’s back, err friendship and relationship?
Impressions
Let me start with I absolutely despise Ginny’s mother. That woman should never have had children. She is self centered and will do anything for the limelight. She does not care who she throws under the bus, as long as she gets air time that is all she cares about.
Declan has a lot of groveling to do in order to win Ginny, and Mabel, over. Mabel is the biggest protector of all of the women in the compound and Ginny is no exception. She puts her foot down and stands up to anyone who threatens her family.
Ginny is the most loving and forgiving person I have ever seen. Everyone deserves a second chance, even if she was never given one. She feels unworthy of love. Her mother treated her like dirt growing up. Then the viral moment that just will not die. She needs a break.
Pip. Lordy Pip. Aunt Pip is going to be the death of all of the residents of the winery. I am still trying to figure out if she is playing with them when she comes up with her wild statements or if she really has a hearing problem. At time you know she has to be messing with them. But then there are other times where she really could have misheard what was said. Only time will tell.
Now what is the deal with Mabel and Tenn? And will we find out in the next book? Only time will tell.
Narration
This full cast narration is amazing. Connor Crais as the Declan, as well as the other male characters, just knows how to deliver the lines. Samantha Brentmoor has been a favorite of mine for years, and her portrayal of Ginny reinforces why. She just nails it. Stella Hunter and Kristyna Zaharek do fabulous jobs on all of the female characters. If you love audio, you will truly enjoy this book.
