Audrey Van was born into wealth. She has a brother who is a MMA fighter and a sister who passed away. She has always kept her head down and done the right thing trying to make her parents proud. She has a PhD and is uber smart and dedicated to her students. But something is missing in her life.
Brooks Dempsey was born to a loving mother. His father, however, was not the type of man who should be raising children. Growing up, he would go to the local gym and learn mixed martial arts. He was good enough to go professional, until an injury sidelined him. He has been in recovery and rehab mode ever since.
Audrey is ready to spice up her life. So much so, she has made a whimsy list with items she wants to do to break out of her good girl shell. She borrows a cabin from her best friend Astrid and her husband for a two week stay. What she does not expect to find is a fresh from the shower clad in a towel man in the cabin when she arrives.
Brooks has been helping Hartley make repairs on the farm he owns and runs. He is using Gray’s cabin to clean up in after finishing for the day before he heads into town. Never in his wildest dreams did he expect an angel to walk into the cabin as he is getting out of the shower.
And so begins Audrey and Brooks’s adventure.
When Brooks cuts his arm on the wire fencing he is repairing, he tells Hartley that Doc can stitch him up. Little does he know she is not an MD, but a PhD. When Audrey tries to explain that to him, he ignores her objections and tells her to stitch him up.
Next up is when Brooks sees Audrey’s whimsy list. He decides he is the person who can help her achiever all of her goals on that list. And boy is it a list.
But when Brooks finds out who Audrey really is, will he be able to put the past behind him? There is bad blood between him and her brother from the past. But when her brother finds out about Audrey and him, bad blood is the least of the problems coming Brooks’s way.
So when Brooks makes his final decision and his ultimate grand gesture, Audrey is over the moon. Especially when her parents tell her about their love story. They are so down to earth and accepting of both her and Brooks. It is what she needs to move on from her childhood trauma and to find the love she deserves.
Impressions
This book makes you realize that what you see on the outside is not necessarily what is going on inside that person. Audrey looks like she is on top of the world. She comes from money. She has a PhD. She has a job she loves, expanding and enhancing young minds. But inside she is lost and lonely. She does not date. She is always striving to be the perfect daughter, perfect professor, perfect friend. She feels like she never measures up.
It is heartbreaking to hear her story about her sister. About how she feels her parents perceive her.
Brooks is dealing with some professional issues. He is recovering from an injury. But he is also dealing with some league issues that could eventually cost him his career. To top it off, his sworn enemy, and the person he believes behind all of his problems, could potentially be the deciding vote on if he gets to return to the ring. Talk about some pressure on his shoulders.
So when Brooks decides to help Audrey complete her whimsy list, he makes a deal with her. What was supposed to be a two week fling has turned in to so much more. Will his grand gesture prove to Audrey that she is so much more than just a fling? And throw in the side benefit that Brooks gets to wipe the scowl off of her brother’s face and man what a way to blow up this story.
Narration
Shiloh James and Connor Brown were such a joy to listen to. I do not get to have them in my ears often and it was a nice change of pace for me. They just seemed to fit these characters and bring them and their problems to life. Here is to more books by these two.
