Brooklyn has grown up in the Montgomery life. That means cheese, cheese and more cheese. And knowing she is loved. She has always been a princess, but she chose to be a landscape architect. She is creative and loves working with her hands.
Reece is the oldest of four boys. He was a firefighter. like the rest of his family, until an injury forced him to retire. He now works for as a fire reconstruction expert for the Montgomery’s. He is an unofficial Montgomery, as are many. They tend to adopt friends of the family into the family.
Brooklyn and Reece tend to work on the same projects, however, not at the same time. He kicks off the project and gets it to a point of finishing. Then she comes in to do all of the landscaping at the end of the project. Since these two tend to butt heads, this arrangement allows them to have their space from each other.
When Brooklyn loses her fiance, everyone is concerned about her. So when she finally starts stepping out and returning to living her life again, it is a good sign. But she is dealing with some things that others do not know about.
When Dash, Brooklyn’s cousin, has to cancel on her for an event where they network, Reece steps in to be her date. Although they are just colleagues, others who see them together believe she has moved on. This ignites hurtful comments and assumptions. But when one person goes so far as to threaten her business, Reece steps in. In all his growliness, he states facts to this person about the contract that was signed and their position within the decision making structure.
When Reece receives the surprise of a lifetime, it is Brooklyn that helps him navigate the new endeavor. She is there to answer questions. She is there as his support system.
With all of the togetherness they are experiencing, it is drawing Reece and Brooklyn closer. They support each other, even when the other does not need or want it. They are there for the other in work, in play and everything else.
Impressions
I loved watching Reece grow. When the book began, he was not very close with his family. Yes he did family dinner with them. But based on the conversations, you know it did n ot happen often. But when he receives a surprise package, it actually draws him and his family closer together. And his brothers are a hoot. I hope one day they get their own books.
Brooklyn is dealing with some heavy emotions in this story. Everyone is watching over her, making sure she is doing okay. But sometimes their watching is overbearing. Sometimes a girl just needs to deal with what she is feeling in her own way. Even if that is making baked goods for everyone and their brother. Personally I would not object, at first. Maybe after I gained five or ten pounds.
All of Brooklyn’s cousins knew that she and Reece were in love with each other before they did. Watching them each realize it and come to terms with it was magical. And in true Montgomery fashion, cheese was always in the picture.
Narration
Teddy Hamilton is always a joy to listen to and he comes through again in this story. Samantha Brentmoor proves again why she is my favorite female narrator. Listening to her play Brooklyn, snarky Caroline and rude Mrs Long showed off her range.
