About When Kings Rise
When Kings Rise begins with Diarmuid OSullivan being given three potential brides to choose from. Since he has time to choose, he decides to play with them.
Amira is determined to be the chosen one and encourages Diarmuid at every turn. She dresses seductively and is willing to do anything he wants her to. Unfortunately, her home life is miserable, which is what drives her to be the chosen one.
Selene is more demure. She is the only child to parents who she believes are selling her in ms arriage. Just because their marriage was arranged, and loveless, does not mean that is what she wants.
Niamh is the oldest of two daughters. She is only doing this in order to protect her sister, who is a gifted ballerina.
Diarmuid is a hit man for the Hand of Kings, run by Victor. When Victor bids a job to be done, he expects it to be done, and done quickly. Diarmuid uses his brides as cover for some of his operations so others are not aware of who he is and what he does.
Diarmuid is chivalrous with his brides. He claims them as his and under his protection. However, can he really protect them from the fallout of his “job”? And what about the mysterious death of his uncle? What will the investigation into his death reveal? And who will be at risk?
When Amira is threatened, will Diarmuid get there in time to protect her? Or will she turn to someone else?
When Kings Rise left so many unanswered questions. I can’t wait to listen to When Kings Bend (book 2).
Narration
When Kings Rise is a full cast narration. All four of the narrators have a great Irish accent, so if they are not Irish, they are darn good.
Scott Rose played Diarmuid and Wolf beautifully. I do not know if it is jealousy or something else, but he brings out the anger, resentment and distrust in both of them. Ava Flynn, Maeve York and Scarlett Rose McCloughan play each of the women, and their related family members so differently, personifying exactly how each of these women bring something different to the table.
As a first time listener to all of these narrators, I would definitely listen to them again. I’m hoping book 2 uses the same narrators, for consistency, as well as my enjoyment.
