Talk Wicked to Me starts with Emerson rushing in to Baz’s veterinary clinic with her dog, who ate her chocolate chip cookie. Realize she is ready to pop a baby out and is harried over her dog, her pregnancy and everything else she needs to still get done before she has the baby. I had to laugh at the lettuce in her hair and the crumbs on her shirt. I mean, how many people can say they have never had crumbs on their shirt or food in places it does not belong on them?
Anyways, Baz gives Ollie, the dog, a clean bill of health. But there is something about Emerson that has piqued his interest.
Emerson never wanted children. But when she finds out she is pregnant, she decides she wants the baby. She has been alone for a long time and maybe the baby will help her not feel so alone. What she does not expect is to have such a strong reaction to the town vet.
Later that day, Baz decides to go on a run. On the last part of his loop, he sees Emerson’s car on the side of the road. He goes over to check on her and boy is he in for a surprise. With no time to spare, she makes a phone call. Next thing we know, in rides family and Dark Knights. What a surprise for Emerson to see.
Baz falls in love with Little B, aka Brennan, from the moment he is born. But it is not just him. His entire family has fallen in love with Emerson and Little B. It is an adjustment for Emerson to have so much help after giving birth. For someone who has been alone for so long, she is used to doing everything on her own. But Gramma Gingy makes sure that both Em and Little B are taken care of.
When Emerson’s past shows up unexpectedly, Baz goes caveman. Emerson is not able to handle this new side of him. So what will happen to these two? Will cooler heads prevail after both have had time to think about things?
During the Suicide Rally, when it is time for Tank, Gunner and Baz to talk about what their sister Ashley meant to them and share stories from their past, Cheeky, aka Rosie, refuses to let go of Papa Tank. I loved the way the entire family handled the situation. It was a first, and yet it was more meaningful. (Note: have tissues handy).
After the rally, Baz is getting ready to leave on his Vets Without Borders assignment. He is worried about Em and Little B, so he wants them to move in to his place, where she will have family close by. But she surprises him, again.
But hold your horses, there is one more shock coming at the end of the book. Be prepared. I gasped when I read it.
