Zander grew up with dyslexia. He knew he was always different and his family was always hovering. So when he grew up, he decided to live life on his terms. That includes never getting married and enjoying life and women. As long as he does not shirk his work responsibilities or the club, he is free to do as he pleases.
Five years ago, Shauna hit her lowest point in life. After a Fourth of July party, she caught a ride home with a complete stranger. This person gave her some sage advice that then sent her on a journey to sobriety. She started volunteering at the fire department and became an EMT.
After a fun night out, Zander oversleeps, due to his “friend” turning off his alarm. He is now late to work and his brother, Zeke, is looking for him. As he is on his way to work, he calls Zeke and explains what happened. Lucky for him, Zeke covered for him by saying he was picking up donuts for everyone. But no one is prepared for what happens next.
Shauna is on her way to work, when tragedy strikes. As an EMT, her training kicks in and she is off and running until the first responders arrive. But she is drawn to one of the victims. Something drives her to the hospital to spend time with the victim.
Fast forward three months. Zander hears a woman humming a song and the sound is so familiar to him. Little does he know his life is about to change. For the better or for the worse is yet to be seen.
When Shauna finds herself in need of help, Zander is there. He helps her get her best friend in to a rehab program. He calls in his brothers and cousin to watch over her best friend until they can get him in to the program. He provides her a place to stay. He cleans up their cottage from the confrontation that ended poorly.
When Zander tells his parents what he is planning in order to help Shauna, they are shocked, to say the least. He basically blindsided them and their reaction is not what he had hoped for. He takes it personally. But when his brothers and cousins question him about this plan, he is just done. He will do what he wants and that is to help Shauna.
But when both Zander and Shauna catch feelings, but are unable to admit it, who will come out the biggest loser?
Impressions
This book is a sad reminder that addiction is a disease and it can rear its ugly head at any time. Relapse is a constant possibility.
My heart broke for Zander as he felt like his family was not supporting him in his decisions. But when they had their come to Jesus meeting, it opened Zander’s eyes to things he did not remember and that he took for granted.
The Wickeds are such a loving family. The care so much for Zander, and all of their children, that they only want the best for them. But Zander has always been impulsive and sadly to his detriment at times. They are concerned about how this will affect him in the long run.
But when everyone sees how much work he and Shauna have done on his house, they are surprised. He has learned to slow down and appreciate the simple things like having a cup of coffee out on the deck while watching the waves roll in.
I laughed so hard at the escapades when Zander and Shauna were painting the various rooms in the house. Their idea of adding texture is unique and fun, and a memory for the record books.
