About One Night With Number 19

Lainey is a single mom. She married her college sweetheart when she found out she was pregnant. She began writing books to support her family while her husband finished school and then after he got sick and could no longer work. Even though she was married, she was basically a single parent. Her husband was too busy with school, then his career and then his illness to help with Ollie. They grew apart as time went on, but she stuck with him through everything. But she made a promise to herself when he passed away and she has no intention of not following through on it.

Sawyer is an only child. His father passed away when he was young and he became the person who held the family together. When he got called up to play hockey professionally, his mother told him to go. But he did not expect the tragedy that was about to happen. Since that day, he has become the be all, end all for his mother.

Sawyer and Lainey meet through mutual friends. For him, it is his hockey teammates. For her, it is Faye, who is married to Gray, one of Sawyer’s hockey teammates. He is attractive, but she is not interested n a relationship. He can’t take his eyes off of her, but she will not give him the time of day. But she will give him one night. And he is completely on board.

But one night is not enough for Sawyer. Lainey and Ollie are everything he has ever wanted. He sees his teammates settling down and having children and it makes him want a family of his own. But he has to take care of some things before he is able to give all of himself to a family.

When weird things start happening to Lainey, Sawyer steps in. He protects her when she needs the physical protection. He listens to her when she thinks she is losing her mind. Things are disappearing and then reappearing in weird places. He convinces her to file a police report, but there is not much to go on. So he orders cameras to put up around her home.

But Sawyer does not know how to say NO to anyone. And when it becomes a problem, it will affect his relationship with Lainey. She will not go through what happened in her marriage again. Something has to change and she calls him out on the fact that he has to do everything for everyone.

Will this be the end of Sawyer and Lainey? Will his dream of having his own family be lost because he insists he can do everything himself and will not let anyone help him? Will the weird happenings at Lainey’s home continue, escalate, or end?

Impressions

After hearing Sawyer’s story, my heart broke for him. He suffered a tragedy that completely changed him, and his relationship with him mother at the young age of 17. No child should have to go through what he did. And no child should have to become the parent at that age.

At the time the tragedy happened in Sawyer’s family, he was dating a young woman. She could not handle everything that happened. She became his third priority and not his first and that was unacceptable. So add another log on the fire of a burning life inferno. Again, no 17 year old should have to deal with all of this crazy and drama.

For the last ten years, Sawyer has never said no to anything. His mom calls, he takes care of whatever she needs. He constantly does things for everyone, like bringing cupcakes and pastries for his teammates. The team needs him to do a charity event, he does it. They need him to help with social media, he does it. But he never does anything for himself. His neck hurts, he rubs it, but he never gets rid of what is causing the problem.

Sawyer has good insight. I truly enjoyed listening to his take on things when he and Lainey would talk. He always gave her food for thought. And it made her see things differently about her past, which made her look at a future with him differently.

I think the best scene in this story is when Sawyer and Leo talk. And I mean really talk. Leo knows about Sawyer’s history. He knows the background. And he is blunt with Sawyer. It was a come to Jesus talk that should have been had sooner. But at least it was had. It forced Sawyer to confront his issues with his mother. It will take some time, but Sawyer is finally learning to say NO.
