About Trying Not to Love You
Ellie is the oldest of four sisters. She was raised by loving parents on the property of her family’s inn, which her grandparents ran with her parents. Sadly, she and her sisters lost their parents when she was just a young adult. She finished raising her youngest sister, getting her through high school. She fell in love with their neighbor when she was just a teenager, and never forgot him.
Cope grew up in a loving family. He fell in love with their neighbor when he was just barely an adult. After watching his older brother enlist in the military for four years in order to protect his wife in the future should anything happen to him, Cope decided to do the same thing. When things did not go as he planned, he never forgot his first love.
When Cope receives a call that his mom is sick, he makes arrangements to leave the military on a family medical emergency retirement. This allows him to retire as if he has his full 20 years in and get full retirement benefits. His intention is to go home and help take care of his mom. But you know what they say about good intentions.
When Ellie sees Cope, she tries to avoid him. She is still hurt over him leaving her for the military and never coming back. She has never stopped loving him and seeing him hurts her too much. She avoids him. She visits his mom when he is not around. She goes into the office early and leaves late to avoid him at meal times, since his mom arranged for him to stay at the inn. But avoidance is not making anything easier.
When Ellie finally agrees to meet with him, things do not go as she planned. But Cope is not giving up. He is determined to win her back, much to her chagrin.
But as time goes on and they actually start talking, things start coming out about what happened in the past. Visits home he made. Letters he wrote. Cope holds nothing back. He tells her everything. But Ellie swears she never received any letters. So now the mystery of the missing letters is in the back of their minds.
When lingering questions start getting answered, will these two remain together? Or will the secrets of the past tear them apart?
Impressions
I loved the opening scene of this book. For what is coming, the setting and mood were perfect. It is a heartbreaking start to this story, but it is the catalyst for things to come.
The Moran sisters celebrate sisters night. Instead of date night, the three sisters living together get together in the pajamas and their sister in the big city video calls them. They spend hours together. Eating, talking, singing, watching a movie. Whatever they want to do. It is such a special time for them, and I love it. It keeps them together, always.
Be prepared for some surprises in this book. Some will make you cry. Some will break your heart. But without them, this story would not be as good as it is.
And let me just say that the youngest Moran sister is a handful. I have no idea who she will be paired with, but Lord give him strength. She will test the patience of a saint. I cannot wait.
Narration
I love listening to Connor Crais. He is a little bit gruff with a little bit smooth in his voice and makes Cope sound so freaking hot. I loved Savannah Peachwood as Ellie. She brought all of the pain from her past to this story, along with a little bit of mischievousness.
