About If You Keep Me

Flip Madden, and his sister Rix, had a hard childhood. Their parents loved them immensely. However, money was always tight. Food was always in short supply. They learned at a young age how to stretch money, and food, to get the biggest bang for their buck. Flip believes food should never be wasted. He has remained frugal to this day, stocking up on food necessities, at least in his eyes, when they go on sale.

Flip has been a PR nightmare for years. Women are always available and he has taken advantage of that perk of being a star hockey player. But things have changed for him and he is no longer out there making scenes and causing his press people to clean up his mess.

Tally is a ballet dancer. She is the oldest child and daughter to the Terror’s head coach. Since her father is a workaholic, and on the road so much with the team, she has grown up being a second parent to her sister and brother. She is now at Tilton University, in her senior year, getting ready to start the next chapter in her life.

Tally is a senior in college and is ready to take the plunge. But all of the guys she has gone out with have not been worthy of her one priceless possession. Will she ever find the right person to take the plunge with?

Flip adores Tally. But she is his coach’s daughter. He loves playing for the Terror and one should never play where they work. But he cannot deny his attraction to her.

So when Tally asks Flip for a favor, he has to tell her no. This will change their relationship. But will it be for the worse, or potentially for the better?

But when Tally’s world is upended she turns to her friend, Flip. He is her safe spot. So much is going on in her life. She is angry. She is frustrated. She is nervous. Flip is there to help her. He listens. He makes sure she has what she needs. He is there for her.

Will these two figure out they are meant for each other? Or will Flip take the careful way out? Is Tally too young for Flip? Will this prove to be too much for them? So many things going against them. Will love overcome it all or will it be too overwhelming for them?

Impressions

I have been waiting for Flip’s book since we met him in book 1 of the series. He was such a playboy, dare I say man ho. Ever since then, he has been working to tame his wild side. But public opinion is very hard to change even if you are a saint.

On top of changing his ways, he has also been working to figure out why he did what he did. It is a story that has affected his life in more ways than his behavior. It has affected his trust. So when he and Tally finally have THE talk, I appreciated that he was introspective and he told her what motivated his prior behavior. It showed how much he had truly grown and what he was willing to do in order to have the one thing that mattered the most to him.

The blow that is dealt to Tally is beyond her control, but it shakes her to her core. She believed things were one way, so to find out she it was not sent her in to a tailspin. She believes she was lied to and her trust has been challenged.

These two have serious trust issues stemming from other people’s actions. But to see them owning up to their own fears and talking to each other about how they feel allows them to build something even more bonded than if they simply dated. They know each others vulnerabilities.

I loved seeing the Tilton gang in this book, supporting Tally through all of the hubba baloo that she was dealing with by dating Flip. Cammie, Chase, Brody, Enid, Gage. I cannot wait to see more from this series since we now say goodbye to the Toronto Terror.

Narration

I thought Lee Samuels was such a great choice to voice Flip. He has a bit of an older sounding voice which reinforces the age gap between Flip and Tally. Then we have CJ Bloom taking Tally from a naive young college student to a woman in charge of what she wants. Great casting choices for this book.
