If You Hate Me is book 1 in the new Toronto Terror series and features Tristan and Beatrix, and Flip as a major side character.
About If You Hate Me
Tristan is a hockey player for the Toronto Terror. When his best friend, Flip, is traded to the Terror, Tristan allows him to move in to his place. It is supposed to be temporary, but Flip is not in any hurry to find his own place and move.
Beatrix, aka Rix, is Flip’s little sister. They grew up with Tristan in their old neighborhood. So when Rix finds herself in need of a new place to live temporarily, Flip tells her she can move in with him and Tristan. Yeah, and he did not consult Tristan on this.
Tristan and Flip each have their own bedrooms. The only room left for Rix is the loft, with no door. Oh, yeah, and that is the room with the television and couch. So no privacy for Rix. But she is okay with this since it gets her out of a bad situation with her living arrangements.
When she moves in, she is not shocked to see how poorly the kitchen is stocked and maintained. She goes to work on cleaning it so she can figure out what they need. Then she starts making a grocery list of necessities. When the grocery sale ads arrive, she scours them to figure out how to make the biggest bang for her buck.
In the meantime, the guys agree to give her money for groceries. Tristan is worried that they are not giving her enough, so he slips extra money in to the envelope in the drawer. He also tells her to use their money to pay for her groceries since she is doing the shopping and helping them with their meal plans and meal preparation.
Oh, and did I mention that Rix is unemployed? It was a rash decision, but warranted. However, now she is unemployed. So while cleaning, prepping and cooking she is also looking for a new job. Lucky her, she makes friends with Hemi who refers her to the team’s financial advisors. Rix has had some time to work with Flip’s portfolio and has increased it significantly. So she takes that with her to the interview.
Rix went to school for finance, but she does not love it. So why did she not go to school for what she loves? Well, she wants to make sure she can take care of herself financially. She is always worried about expenses versus her income. This stems from a childhood of watching her parents make sure they could pay for Flip to play hockey and her parents working so hard just to make ends meat.
After being enemies for forever, all of a sudden they are both hot for each other. Does that mean that they like each other? No, it just means they want to bang. They figure if they do it once, they will get it out of their system. Yeah, best laid plans and all.
Since Flip is a party boy, it is easy for Tristan and Rix to hookup on the regular. But one night everything changes.
All three of these friends suffer through what happened that one fateful night. Friendships are stressed. Family relationships are stressed. Team members are affected. And living arrangements are modified.
It is always a bad idea to date your best friend’s little sister. But when he thinks you two hate each other, it comes as a massive shock. Flip and Tristan need to work things out between them. Flip and Rix need to work things out between them. And Tristan and Rix need to communicate about their feelings and work things out between them.
Impressions
I have never laughed so hard as when some of the alone time scenes happen. The bathroom relief. The eggplant affair. The cucumber debacle. Good lord, people looked at me strangely as I laughed my way down the street walking the dogs.
Narration
Connor Crais is perfect as Tristan. He is snarky and soft, when needed. CJ Bloom has been in my ears a lot recently and I am enjoying her take on the varying female characters. I’m looking forward to listening to more from these narrators.
